Your Timely Opportunity in Under-Utilized IT Hardware

Blog post: Your Timely Opportunity in Under-Utilized IT Hardware

Sage customers have seen our average selling prices (ASP) for most equipment categories increasing over the years. This is the result of continuing efforts to improve refurbishment processes and develop sales channels and buyers who value quality.

Last year value recovery was particularly strong, with ‘Tier 1’ category (Laptops, desktops, servers, mobile phones) ASPs increasing 31% over 2024.

Average selling prices of servers - 2025 vs 2026

Now this trend is accelerating sharply, led by servers. Server ASPs increased more than 700% this January compared to last. The average server, including all configurations across all six Sage locations, sold for $2,370.93 in January 2026.

We believe that the server market is inflated by the massive buildout of AI datacenters. Our three decades of experience in the IT hardware secondary market leads us to believe that prices will eventually return to the historical trend lines—probably abruptly. We anticipate a glut of low-end servers developing in the near term, putting downward pressure on values for those systems.

While it’s possible prices will climb still higher, no one can say when the bubble will burst. Sage is therefore recommending that asset managers consider dispositioning surplus or under-utilized hardware soon. We are happy to perform appraisals of inventories in excess of ten servers to support your decision making. Contact us to get started.
